Advanced Viscosity Workshop

This latest viscosity workshop hosted some all-star printmakers. Most of the participants have taken the workshop before so we were able to experiment with some new techniques including stencils, layering of plates and using tint base to create a more transparent build-up of color.

Lynn Schmidt continued her biomorphic structures. The tint base worked well for her and she was able to get some great subtle variations in color and detail.

After the last workshop, Lynn showed us all how she used the dremmel tool to get a softer line. I showed everyone this time around what I have coined the "Lynn Technique" and one participant in particular (Penny Pemberton) utilized the dremmel to make soft textures in the water of one of her prints and brushed atmospheric marks surrounding her Big Horn image.

Tia Flores in new to the group of artists that have been printing at Oxboo Press (actually she is new to printmaking, too) but when you see her prints you would think that she has been printing all her life!

She started using stencils cut from acetate in order to control different color sections in her prints. In one day she printed around 40, all of them different in color and mood. I'm so happy she found Oxboo Press and has been taking classes here.

On Saturday night, I started printing an varied edition to give to each of the participants. (We always do a fun trade at the end of the workshop.) I combined and layered different borco board plates using additive and subtractive viscosity methods. I also combined solarplate "nude" cut-outs to create this hybrid print. I'm going to experiment more with this in a couple weeks when we all get together to print some more.

Carol Neel was the first to experiment with stencils on Saturday. Why? Well, at first she wasn't happy with the abstractness of the figure in the lower picture plan. He seemed to be lost in the entire composition. Of course I liked it abstract like that and I LOVED the colors! I suggested that maybe a stencil would work great to pull color out of the background and accent the figure. Well, we played a bunch that morning and got some great results, even off-set printing with the acetate to have a double exposure look.

A couple of weeks ago, Sue Roberts, one of the artists renting a studio at Oxboo Press invited her grandchildren to come spend the day making art. She took them over to our amazingly generous neighbors- Sam and Sutter at Sierra Water Gardens to be inspired by the Koi fish, plants and ponds. When they came back to the studios they cut cardboard into these wonderful "water creatures" and glued them on to matboard. Sue sealed the matboard and the next day I printed them for them using the Viscosity rollers and inks that I had set out for the workshop that weekend.

The prints were soooo inspiring that Sam and I are talking about doing the same thing with some of her clients' children next summer. I'm always intrigued by how kids "get it". They just now how to compose a picture!

Candace Nicol's evolving into Nolan Preece's

When I was thinking about what I would do for Communicable Dis-ease, I was in the middle of creating large-scale male nudes. The nudes themselves were addressing issues surrounding the female gaze and role reversals. This project, however, called for a social narrative, one that was “infectious”… (both communicable and disease mean infection, infectious). I thought this particular piece would act as an artistic transition between my social/political small prints and the large digital male nudes.

The final piece, ORNAMEN panel 1 works through ideas of traditional historical representations of the nude and also the notions of decoration, a realm loosely associated with femininity and domesticity. This statement brings me to a point of inquiry, that instead of simply re-interpreting the popular notion of nudity in art (the female nude – the male gaze), I would like to examine how a female artist can define nudity through beauty and pleasure, through the purist reaction of seeing a nude male and/or female interacting within a defined space.

Consequently, in my search for understanding the male form, I have realized that I would be creating art that is indulgent and sensual, an erotic after affect to my own gazing. This pleasure I am overtly sharing with the viewer and with the next artist, Nolan who will hopefully be “infected…AKA dis-eased” with beauty.

US History Portfolio II -my print YEAR 1833

The year I was assigned for this project - 1833. I came across a map created in 1833 - The Eagle Map of the United States Engraved for Rudiments of National Knowledge - Author - Churchman, Joseph and James; Moore I.W. It shows an eagle superimposed and engraved in color on a map of the U.S. The assumption is that the map drawing was intended to capture the imagination of young people of the time. I created a 4-color etching using one of my male figures pointing a new Colt revolver (actually patented in 1836) and behind gesturing "peace"...yeah right! The Secretary of War Lewis Cross was appointed by George Gaines to manage the Indian removals in 3 phases ending in 1833. The Choctaws removal during this time along with the Meteor Storm of 1833 (Leonids) inspired the background and the title of the piece.

This is the first print done for a proposal that is being submitted by Oxbow Press to the City of Reno for a public art show in the Events Center windows at Center Street. We are looking for more printmaker/artists to contribute to 11 other collaborative print works. So far, The Inkheads at UNR are going to do two (the SAGE symbol and the SUN/MOUNTAIN RANGE symbol) and Oxbow Press monitors and friends are doing the DICE symbol.

The exhibit that I chose was Firewalls by Candace Nicol. All the pieces of this exhibit were great but the one that caught my attention the most was the one called Border watch – fence mending. When I saw it I was automatically reminded of the summer I spent in San Diego, where I got to go on a tour of the U.S.-Mexico Border with Border Patrol Agents. It was an experience of a life time. When I read the artist’s statements and got to understand where the inspiration for the pieces came from, I was able to identify with the exhibit. My family came to this country as immigrants and have only strive to become respectable people who accept the American culture into which they have come to live in. The issues surrounding the border sometimes can be to much to handle; maybe it is just because those issues hit so close to home. This art piece brought them to light but in a totally different way, it was something that I had never seen before. What I liked was the bluntness of the piece. It was easy to see that it was about the U.S-Mexico Border. The feeling that I felt when I was between the old fence and new one came rushing back. I couldn’t help but think about all the people who risk their lives by trying to cross these two fences. It is crazy to think that one piece of art can invoke so many emotions.

The piece of art I chose was “The House that Jack Built”, by Candace Nicol. I chose this piece because I participated in an environmental friendly class at TMCC last semester. The art piece registered as a topic I had knowledge of. It relates to Monsanto (who regulates a majority of the populations food supply) and how they are patenting seed and crop which is wiping out farmers across the country that initially began growing healthy, delicious food for consumers to benefit by. The first thing that caught my attention in the piece was the human pierced by stakes. The color is red like blood from the stake wounds. I interpret this to represent how fast food harmfully affects a body, also foreign matter that doesn’t belong in a body. Around the body are calculations in another language not understood by viewers, but intended by another source? Slowly above the human body, a spirit is drifting away into darkness or no return. The Fast Food icon “Jack” is being directed by a hand (which reminds me of Monsanto) above controlling the situation. Clearly, aware of the harm caused. Jack looks a bit tainted and untrustworthy, questionable even. A green human like figure, whom I consider to be nature, seems distressed. Honest and pure, standing behind “it’s” words. The figure is elevated, bold and strong. The green color of the figure really accents the piece as well. The poem or riddle on the portrait means to me that you lie in the bed you lay. “Jack” has destroyed any hope of healthy organic living and therefore he can live with the dead mouse in his house compliments of the farmer. I love the piece because I feel like the human pierced by stakes. Being controlled like a puppet in the opposite of normalcy society has created.

Summer Project

I've been working on this project for the last month. It's the CATS Project Proposal for the Nevada Museum of Art. They are going to pick 30 Nevada artists to paint/adorn 3-dimensional cat forms as part of the Museum's 80th Anniversary Gala fundraising event which will be celebrated in June 2011 in conjunction with a major exhibition, To Live Forever: Egyptian Treasures from the Brooklyn Museum. Each cat is 36 inches tall sitting on a 3 inch tall base.

I've been teaching screenprinting classes all summer long at Oxbow Press, so I naturally created my renderings as screenprints. I played around with different color schemes to find one that I thought would work the best with the CATS Project. If my proposal is chosen, I plan to use various printmaking and painting techniques to adorn the final cat. The “background” line elements and ornamental sun burst in the rendering will be constructed of layered screenprinted collagraphs glued on matboard and then cut out and adhered to the cat sculpture to give the sculpture a low relief texture. The figures in the middle of ornamental sun burst will be on the back of the cat and will be gel transferred and then painted in oil. The flowers and houses will be painted. The final pieces will be coated with a fine layer of resin or heavy layers of clear gloss coating.
